Common Land Measurement Units
Land area can be measured in many different units depending on the region and the scale of the property. For residential real estate, square footage is common, while agricultural and commercial land is often discussed in acres or hectares.
What is an Acre?
An acre is a unit of area commonly used in the US and UK. One acre is equal to **43,560 square feet**. Historically, it was defined as the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day.
Metric Land Measure (Hectares)
In the metric system, the hectare (ha) is the primary unit for land area. One hectare is equal to **10,000 square meters** or approximately **2.471 acres**.
Note: This calculator assumes the land is flat. For sloped terrain, the "surface area" may be greater than the "map area" provided by standard measurements.
